There are several occasions during the year we can use to do something for our languages and literacy. Of course literacy starts from children. One of the first books with written words most children hold in their hands are ABC-Books. But many will never have this for their language. We can at least change something: we can make free material available. We will change things one drop at a time. Nobody will ever have the possibility to do it all and this is why we need to connect and co-operate with other organisations. If everyone does one small part in the end we can really change things.
Outi some months ago created an ABC-Book for all children who have Joola, a language of Senegal, as mother tongue. Well it is tested by her own children. Most of us do things this way btw. This was the moment when we decided: we will go for ABC-Books and later for other small literacy projects in as many languages as possible.
All material created will be available for free.
Below are the files ABC_eng_newlanguage.ods for OpenOffice.org and ABC_eng_newlangauge.xls for Excel. These are the files to be completed. First we need the alphabet and then the translation of the words. The approx. 200 words should be enough to get at least one word per letter. If not, we will need to add the missing ones with your help. The goal is to have tree words with pictures for each letter.
As for the pictures, this is the first project we do together with openclipart.org - they have really great free material for kids we can use in many different projects.
Note: The terminology you provide will be available as a collection under Creative Commons CC-BY license within our multilingua dictionary Ambaradan. Vox Humanitatis will care about the layout and creation of the ABC-Books.
