Greetings from Finland!
This is the week, when most of the schools start here. And because this event, I will visit tomorrow the local radio of the National Broadcast Company Yle... I will tell to the people in live program, why did I write the ABC in Diola Fogny (dyo). :) I wonder if you want to hear the live stream (in Finnish) at 9.00 - 9.30 Finnish time (UTC+3). ;-) http://yle.fi/livestream/tampere.asx
Main thing goes like this: we found several books in Diola Fogny, but all of them had different spelling! I was comparing the books and some PDF-documents from Internet. I found some logic together with documents translated by professors of the University Cheikh Anta Diop, grammar of David Sapir and the general pronunciation sounds. I spent hours and hours asking my husband
Ismaila Sané to read and pronounce words in "Joola" and then we found similarities with some of the documents. There by comparing, deleting and correcting came the spelling system of Diola Fogny. And after that I had to think which form is the best for a child to read a word in their own native tongue. Had quite a struggle and in the end I decided to show first the article of the word together with the basic form. Example bu + rok + ab = the work the word contains bu (article) + rok (basic form of the substantive and verb of work) + ab ( the finishing part, WHICH I deleted, because it is not always used and is logical to guess from the article) So the word "
burok" contains the article and basic form of the word WITHOUT the end part which is easy to guess and not used always.
The work of creating the ABC was long, because we speak now about the native tongue of my husband and my children - NOT MINE! So first I had to understand the words, understand and HEAR the "normal" vowels and "nasal" vowels. It was long, challenging, exciting and yes some days also tiring process. But I had to do it. Because there was not a chance for me to check my own face from the mirrow IF I would not do it KNOWING I have the possibility and the knowledge to create something solid literature to my children... The last child of our house is now turning to be 5 and it was the last time to create the ABC for our children. So this was not mainly a present to our children - it was my way of maintain my pride inside me so that I can walk freely knowing "I did what I had to do"!
So let the school start - long live the mother language which will help us to learn the world!
:D
